Digital literacy is important in an ever increasingly connected world. But for the incarcerated people, the free and technology-dependent world created a complex situation that amplifies their digital vulnerabilities and social exclusion.
Prolonged prison life, poor access to education, and limitations of technology use significantly reduce their capabilities in recognizing and adapting to the modern world. Upon re-integration to a technology-dependent society, they lack the skills and miss the opportunities in preserving family relationship, reconnecting with good friends, and finding jobs with decent pay.
Literature surveys show that while there are educational approaches to rehabilitation and re-entry, most of the mechanisms are not digitally nor technology oriented. Existing policies, security issues, poverty, or the limited ICT initiatives and support renders the offenders digitally incapacitated from functioning in digitally-dependent free world.
As members of the College of Computer Studies and by extending our tech arms from the walls of our university to bars of the local jail, we see it deemed our investment to both humanity and the well-being of the society. This community service hopes to offer a pathway for rehabilitation, reintegration and a more equitable future.
We hope that the TechBehindBar activities will have a significant implications, both for PDLs themselves and for the society as a whole.
